Episode #118: Penguins Can’t Fly Featuring Gabe Karp

“You don't have to resolve all the world's problems at once, it is possible to have a productive, positive conversation with somebody who disagrees with you and you can find common ground and work together, if it's important to you.”

Despite the fact the penguins are birds with wings and fearhers, they can’t fly like other birds. This is a commonly accepted fact that nobody gets mad about.

We can significantly reduce conflict and strife by simply accepting people as they are in the same fashion that we accept that penguins will never take flight. When we stop expecting others to miraculously change into something they're not overnight, we can save ourselves so much unnecessary frustration.

Acceptance is the ability to see that others have a right to be their own unique persons. That means having a right to their own feelings, thoughts and opinions. When you accept people for who they are, you let go of your desire to change them.

“In between expectation and reality is a space filled with suffering and conflict and the wider that space is, the greater our suffering is. So the penguin analogy is born.”

Widely considered the gold standard in conflict management and leadership, Gabe Karp's approach honed over 30 years helps individuals and organization harness the power of constructive feedback, open negotiation, and conflict resolution to achieve more than you thought possible.

Gabe who spent the first ten years of his career as a trial lawyer is the author of Don't Get Mad at Penguins: And Other Ways to Detox the Conflict in Your Life and Business which is an indispensable tool kit for engaging and harnessing healthy conflict to drive success and happiness, and eliminate the pain and stress of toxic conflict.

Gabe chats with Audley on The Audacious Living Podcast to discuss the importance of accepting people for who they are and where theu re at, why all conflict isn’t bad and how it's possible to have a productive, positive conversation with somebody who disagrees with you.
