Episode #40: Appreciating The Now featuring Matthew Newman

“There's a gift I was given from this. And that is something I will own.”

Matthew S. Newman

Staying in the present isn't always an easy thing but when you focus on the now and make a conscious effort to stay there, you're giving yourself an opportunity to appreciate what you have front of you. You’re not allowing the past to get in the way of the present while at the same time you're not getting too far ahead of yourself by being consumed with the future.

Matt Newman is a husband and financial services wholesaler who was unexpectedly diagnosed with grade-three astrocytoma (brain cancer) at only 39 years old. At the same time, he had three children under five, and his father-in-law Larry was fighting pancreatic cancer. His life changed instantly.

“We all have issues and challenges that we're going to face at some time and we don't know when that's going to be.

Knowing all his basic financial planning was complete allowed him to take on his cancer battle without regret, resentment, and money worries. As he lay in a hospital bed before his brain surgery, he realized every speech he had ever given on the need for planning in advance of the bad was actually about him.

His book, Starting at the Finish Line is the autobiography which chronicles the journey that he and his entire family took together which got him to a place of clarity, understanding and appreciation. The book's underlying message of why it's important to get your financial planning in order is both inspirational and actionable. Matt stops by The Audacious Living Podcast to share his powerful story and discuss the significance of staying in the now, planning in advance of the bad and his warrior spirit.
