Episode #137: Building Our Happiness Muscle! Featuring Dr. Gillian Mandich

There's no stigma with saying I want to be happier. In fact, as a happiness researcher, I have not met somebody yet in my eight years of doing this work, that has said to me, I'm good. I don't want to be here.

We are certainly living in stressful times and its during these moments that it may be harder for us to find happiness or even things to be happy about. All you’ve got to do is turn on the news on any given day, and you can find something to bring you down quickly. Despite what the fairy tales depict, happiness doesn't appear by magic. It's not even something that happens to you. It's something you can cultivate and while a bulk of what determines happiness is our personality, the things we think about and our behaviors that can be changed.

People who are happy seem to intuitively know that their happiness is the sum of their life choices, and their lives are built on the following pillars:

  • Devoting time to family and friends

  • Appreciating what they have

  • Maintaining an optimistic outlook

  • Feeling a sense of purpose

  • Living in the moment.

“It's like a muscle. So you go into the gym, you exercise, you lift weights over time, you get stronger. So the same is true for happiness. We do things that make us happy and over time, it's like our happiness muscle grows.”

Dr. Gillian Mandich is a scientist on a mission to help people live their happiest life. She’s a published researcher; two-time TEDx speaker and the founder of The International Happiness Institute of Health Science Research.
