Staying positive during difficult times or when dealing with challenging life moments isn’t always the easiest thing in the world to do but it can prove to be a powerful weapon in outlasting these undesirable moments.
In early 2012, Terry Tucker was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, which presented on the bottom of his foot. By the time the melanoma was detected, it had metastasized to a lymph node in his groin. He subsequently had two surgeries to remove the rare cancer tumors and after he healed, was put on a weekly injection of a drug called Interferon, to help keep the disease from coming back.
After taking it close to five years, it was discovered that the Interferon became so toxic to his body and he nearly lost his life. The Interferon gave him severe flu-like symptoms for two to three days after each injection. He not only experienced severe pain but lost a significant amount to weight, was constantly nauseous, fatigued, and chilled. Terry lost his ability to taste food significantly diminished, and his body constantly ached.
“Pain is inevitable. Suffering, on the other hand, that's optional. That's what you do with that pain. Do you use it to make you a stronger and tougher and more determined individual? Or do you wallow in it and want to feel sorry for yourself and have other people feel sorry for you?
During his time of recovery Terry decided to capture his learnings on paper and wrote a book, entitled Sustainable Excellence, Ten Principles to Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life. He did so to help people find and live their purpose.
“My hope is that people who read the book will lead a life of significance, as well as a life of success.”
