Episode #150: Empowering Others To Be Better Featuring Johnelle Hosking

“We're not really taught to figure out the secret sauce that's inside us, our soul fulfilling their purpose. I don't believe that we have one purpose, I believe that one can change and grow and evolve as we do as people.”

It was former president of the United States, John Quincy Adams who once said, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."

We've heard time and time again that confidence is one of the keys to success however the acquisition of confidence and how it gets built up and maintained is entirely different story. Gaining self confidence can be a real struggle to many because we can’t exactly snap our fingers, and magically be more confident overnight. It takes time, energy, deliberate action and diligence to become a confident person.

With one of the biggest obstacles to people’s success being the crippling thought that they might fail and shouldn’t even try, it naturally makes sense for us to somehow help others develop their confidence. In the end, we're doing more for them than we ever realize. Here's five quick and easy things we all can do to build up confidence in others:

1. Recognize and compliment

Giving genuine compliments to others have great power and can change how someone views themselves while making them feel more secure in who they are.

2. Being an active listener

People need to talk about their issues to work through them, so starting conversations and actually listening to them can be a big help. These conversations need to be a judgment-free zone so your friends can feel safe when talking to you.

3. Support their Leadership

Developing leadership skills is important for life, but so many people having trouble seeing themselves as a leader. Leadership opportunities happen more often than you’d think; take advantage of them and help friends do the same.

Aside from developing your own leadership skills, you can support others when they’re in a lead role. If you have a friend who is shy or does their best to avoid taking the lead, give them opportunities to make smaller group decisions and ease into it.

4. Encourage Friends to do Great Things

Be that friend who encourages others to take a risk and do something beyond themselves that they never thought imaginable.

5. Accept Them For Who They Are

People sometimes struggle with their own identity and will question whether or not, they're enough. Be proactive about celebrating their accomplishments, support them during their hard times, and be a friend.

"You don't build confidence by doing nothing, you've got to take action, you've got to make small steps and they compound on each other like the whole compound effect."
